We didn't bring along a laptop, but I kept a handwritten journal and of course, we took lots of pics. We laugh now looking back because we were so new to the digital camera age that we took a 35mm camera along as well, just to make sure we didn't somehow screw up and lose all the digital pictures. Luckily, we got home with all of them, though they're not quite the quality we're used to these days.

We began our journey to Jaden back in the summer of 2002, submitted our dossier to China on February 21, 2003 and received our spicy girl's referral on November 17, 2003. We left New Year's Day 2004 on our exciting and life-changing trip and made some precious friends along the way. Happy reading and thanks for stopping by!

We're outta here!

January 1, 2004

DFW to San Francisco:
The flight was good and on time. It was very windy in SF so the last few minutes were pretty bumpy. The flight was full, so Derek and I had to sit on different rows (he was in front of me) and he sat by a man that was from Singapore.
Checking in from SF

San Fran to Beijing:
BUSINESS CLASS ROCKS. We are so thankful for going ahead and paying extra for these seats. We have plenty of room and had a nice meal of lobster, salad, fruit, dessert and the works. Derek had the duck and said it tasted like a frozen Chinese dinner from the microwave and I had the seafood. We have already met several families who are adopting, including a couple from Austin, Heather and Scott. This is their first baby, so they are super excited. I just took my first Ambien and hope to be asleep soon, we have 9 more hours to Beijing. (later in flight) Business class is definitely the way to go, we had more good food and snacks after our nap and I watched Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which kept me entertained for a while.

Arrival in Beijing

January 2, 2004

Once again, we encountered no problems on arrival, we breezed through customs and met up with the rest of our group before catching a bus to the hotel. We went to bed at 10pm and then were awake around 2am, but went back to sleep for a while before we had to get up. We had breakfast in the hotel and then headed out for the Great Wall. We stopped on the way at a jade factory and bought some things for Jaden (lions and a cute little teapot) and a dragon-phoenix ball for us. They gave us the history of the different types of jade and where they come from...very interesting. We could see parts of the Great Wall as we approached the mountains and were amazed at the size of it. Our guide took us to the Outer Wall, which is larger than the inner, and we were able to walk up very high. The weather was gorgeous and warmer than we expected so we were actually sweating when we got to the top. Not to mention the serious leg burn! I hope our pictures do it justice. After leaving the Wall, we had lunch at a restaurant called the Golden Celestial and loved the food. It was served on a lazy susan (which our guide called suzie, haha) and we all shared the dishes. The restaurant was connected to a Cloisonne factory and we got to see it being made. I never realized how much hard work went into it...very beautiful. Next stop was the Hutong tour. This was my favorite part of the day. We got a ride through the old part of the city in a rickshaw (reminded us of that Seinfeld episode) and actually toured a Chinese home that was around 100 years old. The hutongs (or small lanes) are so narrow that cars don't fit. Our driver was really great and passed lots of people, which couldn't have been easy with our big selves on there! We then went to a square that had a bell tower and a drum tower and were treated to a traditional tea ceremony. We tried green dragon bell and fresh jasmine tea that was hand rolled and very rare. The girl who performed the ceremony was very cute and funny. We just ordered pizza up to our room which should be interesting and are completely exhausted. I don't think we have to worry about waking up in the middle of the night tonight. One day closer to Jaden!
Beijing-Day 2

January 4, 2004

We started the day very early (3am for me). I guess we still have a little adjusting to do. Orientation with Holt was very exciting and emotional. I felt like I was on the verge of tears the entire time they talked about what to expect when we meet the babies. About half of our group found out today that their babies are in foster care (those at the Yuanling SWI) which was quite shocking to them. They may have a more challenging day ahead than we do because their babies are actually bonded with a family. They also received recent pics of the babies and the SWI which was exciting to see. They will not tour the SWI because it is 8 hours from Changsha, but they may be able to come with us to ZZ. We met a few new families today that just arrived so now our group has grown to 40. There are 2 families who have their Chinese daughters with them who we have really enjoyed getting to know. We had yet another good Chinese meal here in the hotel and then left for our tours of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Tiananmen Square is gigantic and can hold up to 500,000 people. There were vendors trying to sell us souvenirs everywhere and the are sometimes very persistent. We must have said "no" at least 500 times today. The Forbidden City is over 1000 meters long and we walked every meter. Some of us started to feel like the tour would never end! It is beyond my comprehension that it was built in 1420 and still stands today. Even the trees were that old and we took a pic of the oldest tree called the Lump Tree. I think by the end of the day, most of us could only think of tomorrow and were ready for the sight seeing to be over. We ate dinner with a couple from Montana (Mike and Alison) and really like them. Alison is from Irving and Mike is from Louisiana so I guess we are just drawn to those from our part of the country! Our bags are already packed for tomorrow and we are really getting anxious now. In just a few hours our lives are going to change forever and I can't even describe how excited we both are. We have no idea what to expect tomorrow to be like when they come knocking on our hotel room door with our daughter in tow. We have talked a lot about Jakob today and really miss him, he wouldn't way much on the phone today but at least he heard my voice. We are definitely happy with the decision to rent the cell phone. I've actually managed to make it to 8:30 tonight (I was asleep by 7pm last night) so I hope to be fully adjusted to the time soon. Who knows what tomorrow night will bring! Beijing was incredible and we will always treasure this experience. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how crazy people drive here. I don't know why they bother to paint stripes on the road because none of the cars/buses/bikes pay any attention to where they are going. Our guide told us that their stop lights are merely "suggestions" and that they don't really have to obey them. Beijing traffic makes Dallas rush hour look like a cake walk. Pretty funny to watch but a little scary to be in the middle of the action! I almost forgot to mention too, these two very cute Chinese college students approached us in the Square and asked me about the pin I was wearing (Feb DTC). They told me how beautiful I was and asked if I was a model, HAHA! We explained why we are here and they were very sweet and told us all about why there are so many girls to adopt. Sometimes we feel like people here think we're from another planet instead of just another country. Our guide explained that many of them had probably never seen foreigners before and that's why they were so curious. Several Chinese people snapped pictures of us, which was very amusing.

The Big Day

January 5, 2004

Neither of us slept well last night, and we were both up very early. We had to have our bags outside the door at 7am, and be in the lobby to go to the airport by 9:15. Derek was so nervous that he couldn’t eat breakfast and he paced all around the lobby while we waited to leave. It reminded me of the day I had Jakob, he just physically could not be still. Some of our travelmates got tickled that he was so nervous because he’d been so cool and collected up to that point. The flight from Beijing to Changsha was about 2 hours long (seemed longer in those tiny Chinese airline seats), but a little nerve-wracking given how anxious we all were to get there and meet the babies. Shortly after we arrived, we had to go do paperwork then we headed back to our rooms to WAIT. The Hua Tian Hotel is 5-star and very beautiful, we have gorgeous white down comforters and pillows, and Jaden’s little crib even has a tiny down comforter of it’s own. The lobby is all decked out for the Chinese New Year, we’ll be sure and get pics of that later. Anyway, back to the good part! Tracy, our Holt guide, call at 4:55pm to say that the babies had arrived and that they would come by in 5-10 minutes. (insert pacing and nervously preparing cameras here) At 5:05, the knock at the door finally came and I opened it. She looked totally calm and was so cute all dressed in a huge poofy yellow and orange outfit. The orphanage caretaker handed her to me (insert tears rolling down my cheeks here) and she just looked right up at me then started checking out the rest of the room. She was breathing really quickly, but she didn't cry or seem too scared of us. One of the first things I noticed about her was that she had so many teeth (7)! Vicki (our local guide) and the caretaker left us and let us have about 10 minutes alone with her. She looked back and forth at both of us and Derek videotaped that first few minutes (I can only imagine what was going through her mind at that point). I handed her to him and took a few pictures, and she wasn’t too thrilled with that so he gave her back to me. I tried to sit down on the bed with her, but she whimpered so I jumped right back up (I didn’t want to be the first one to make her cry, lol) and walked around the room talking to her. Vicki and the caretaker came back in and told us more about her and answered our questions. They said she had a slight cold and that she had a little diarrhea because they had just changed formula at the orphanage. She had a little bruise on her forehead where they had put an IV to give her fluids. These are some of the other things they told us about her: She like to watch TV, she eats and sleeps well, she likes to suck on her blanket to go to sleep (even though they tried to break the habit), and that on the bus on the way to the hotel, that she had said “baba”, which is Mandarin for Daddy, for the first time ever and they thought it was very strange that she would say it today (she’s a genius, I tell you!). They left and then we were on our own. We slowly started to take off her layers (there were 3!) and finally got down to her tiny little body. I put her in a purple 6-9 month size outfit with purple and white socks and a bib that said “I love my big brother”. All 20 of our newly formed families then met for dinner here in the hotel at 6:30. Jaden just sat quietly at first and looked around, she seemed to be just taking it all in. I made her a bowl of congee and steamed egg and she ate off the spoon like a pro. She ate 3 bowls full as a matter of fact and probably would’ve kept going if I’d let her. Then the spicy girl show began…she started smiling at me when I gave her kisses and got more and more animated the more we played. Everyone thought she was such a cutie and couldn’t believe how happy and smiley she was. Many of the babies, especially those who had come from foster care, were very upset and cried throughout dinner. I felt so bad for their new Mommies and Daddies, especially those who had just become parents for the first time. We came back to the room and tried to give her a bottle but she wouldn’t take it and we didn’t have much luck getting her to bed either. She faked us out by falling asleep at 9:30 but then was up at 10:15 ready to play! She didn’t go back to sleep until around 2:30am. She’s such a cute little stinker though, we didn’t mind too much. We are head over heels in love already and are so blessed to call this beautiful child our daughter!
Getting ready to head to Changsha

Our room, complete with crib

First moments with her

Our first dinner

Day 2 with Jaden

January 6, 2004

We had to be up early to go do the official adoption so we finally had to wake Jaden up to get her ready to go. I dressed her in the pink Tommy outfit with her pink jacket and little flowered hat. We rode the bus to the Civil Affairs office in Changsha and had to do a little paperwork (it never ends), then we had a very informal interview with an official. She asked us if we were satisfied with our baby, and of course, we said YES! We then had our first family picture made and had to check the documents for the notary. Jaden was really good the whole time and just started to fuss at the end (we had to wait a little while after we were done). Derek decided to try and make another bottle and this time she took it right away. We figured out that she really likes her bottles steaming hot! She even sweats when she drinks them. We had to stop on the way back from the CA office and have Jaden's passport picture retaken because I guess the first one didn't come out right (2 other families had to stop also). Then we had our 1st ride in a taxi in China and boy it was scary. NY taxi drivers seem calm compared to these maniacs! We ate lunch in the Western restaurant here and I had spaghetti and Derek had a hamburger. It was our first American food in days and it tasted good. We just kind of hung out for the rest of the day.
Showing her the outfit

Cutie pie

At the Civil Affairs office

Finally got that bottle hot enough

This is a page in my journal where they stamped her cute little pink footprint while we were doing the official paperwork

Shopping Day

January 7, 2004

Our 2nd night with Jaden went much more smoothly than the first. She went to sleep around 7:30 and slept until 12:30am. She had a bottle and played a little until 2:30 and then went back to sleep. She is desperately looking for whatever she used to sleep with, which makes me sad. I guess she used to suck on a blanket to sleep and the blankets we have aren't the same. I am hoping to see a blanket like she had at the orphanage when we go on Saturday and maybe we can find something like it. We went to Wal Mart today as a group and it was very interesting. In some ways it was very similar to our store (only cheaper) and in other ways it was very unusual. There were some strange food items around and that whole section smelled absolutely nasty! These people eat some weird stuff. We only got scolded once by an old lady about not having enough clothes on Jaden. She rode around with me in the Baby Bjorn and had a good time. She was a little fussy on the bus back to the hotel because she was pretty tired. We tried to get her to take a nap and at first, it looked like she was going to, but then she pooped and it was downhill from there. She had quite the little meltdown and inconsolable for a few minutes. We finally made her a bottle which helped temporarily, but then the fit was back on. Finally, we loaded her into the carrier and Derek walked her up and down the hall until she went to sleep. She has been much happier since then and is playing on the bed with Derek right now. She has the cutest smile you have ever seen and has giggled a lot today. She is starting to get more vocal and has the cutest little girly voice. She puts EVERYTHING in her mouth so we have to really watch what we give her to play with. We are going to give her a bath tonight and hope that we have another good night.
Checking Daddy out (and check out that pollution out the window, it was so dreary and foggy in Changsha)

Loves the remote, just like Daddy

Look at all those teeth!

Another cute hat (though she hated it!)

Provincial Museum

January 8, 2004

Jaden slept all night from 9:30 to 6am!!! We were so excited! She woke up in a great mood, just singing and smiling. We tried to find the cell phone this morning to call Mom and discovered that we had misplaced it somewhere. I guess we left it on the coach yesterday and someone kindly turned it in to Tracy so we got it back, whew! We left around 9:30 to go to the Hunan Provincial Museum and little miss spicy baby had one of her tantrums on the bus. She fell asleep finally, but boy, what a show on the way! The museum was very beautiful and is the pride of joy of Hunan Province. Three tombs that were about 2100 years old were discovered here and the relics from the tombs are displayed in the museum. One of the people buried was a 50 year old woman who was very well preserved and she is on display. She is the oldest and best conditioned corpse ever found. She still had her hair and was very soft looking. It was amazing, the tombs were buried very deep and there was silk, embroidery and all kinds of dishes and other treasures buried there. All of it was in excellent condition and didn't look 100 years old, let alone 2100! Very interesting. On the way back to the hotel, Jaden was tired and once again showed us that spicy side. She is now taking a really good and much-needed nap.
Only picture we got at the museum, cameras weren't allowed inside

Goofing off in the playroom at the hotel

More Shopping

January 9, 2004

Well, today we were supposed to go to the Xiang Embroidery Institute but the power was out there so we went shopping instead. We went to a department store called Apollo and a Friendship store. We really didn't see much that we wanted, but we did find some Chips Ahoy cookies and some fake cappuccino mix. We ate lunch here at the hotel at a place called Food Street where they have all kinds of Chinese including the super spicy Hunan dishes. It was OK, but I don't think we'll eat there again. We're kind of sick of Chinese food! Jaden is doing so well, her little spicy fits are getting better. I think she is starting to figure out that we aren't leaving her and she lets us comfort her more now than before. She wore the pink marshmallow outfit today and got lots of smiles from the grandmas. She seemed very comfy in the Baby Bjorn today and likes walking around looking at things. I guess she was used to getting a lot of activity and gets bored hanging in the hotel room, as do we! She has been sleeping really well.
More pretty in pink

In the granny approved marshmallow snow suit (no need for this at home, but we're glad we have it here)

Chinese New Year decorations

Pretty in red (we dressed her in this for her visa pic)

Zhuzhou City

January 10, 2004

Today we had the privilege of visiting the Zhuzhou SWI where Jaden spent the first 10 months of her life. It was an experience I will never forget. Jaden's room was on the 5th floor and we got to see where she slept and played. There were basically 3 small rooms. One was packed with cribs, literally wall-to-wall, one had walkers and a few other toys and the one in the middle was where they changed and bathed them. There was one little girl that kept staring and waving at me and looking at her just broke my heart. I cried almost the whole time we were there because all I wanted to do was bring those sweet babies home with us. The orphanage was built in 1960 and right now there are 290 babies with 90 caretakers. It was clean, but very cold and we understood why they kept so many layers on the babies. The caretakers smiled and played with Jaden and gave her a cookie. They gave us back the photo album I had sent and she recognized it right away. I was so glad to see it because I asked about it the day we met her and they just shook their heads like they didn't know about it. She really seems to like it and we think she saw it quite a bit at the orphanage because she really did seem to recognize us on Monday. Jaden handled the trip much better than we expected. We were on the bus for an hour and a half both ways and she slept through most of the trips. We got to see where she was found and that was so special to us. We went around to six of the babies' finding sites, but didn't get to see the other 3 because they were too far away. Overall, it was a good day, but a very sad one for me, as well. We didn't take the video camera because we weren't sure if they would allow it, but we did get some pictures. We've just hung out in our room since returning and my cold is really aggravated after all the crying and being out in the wet and cold weather.
Before we left to go to ZZ

The reception room at the SWI

One of her sweet caretakers

With a cookie and her photo album

Some of her little roommates

Driving back, checking out her album

Holding on tight to my sweetie

Xiang Embroidery Museum

January 11, 2004

Finally today we got to visit the famous embroidery museum. We saw some beautiful pieces and saw ladies that were working on several pieces that they said would take years to complete. One lady was working on a portrait of a man that she's been working on for 2 years! We bought a panda embroidered on light green silk for Jaden's room and a book about Hunan embroidery that has some samples of the different styles in it. On the way back from the factory, we stopped at McDonald's and were SO happy! We both got Big Macs, fries and they even had fried apple pies! It was the best meal we'd had in many days. This afternoon we have more paperwork to do and then we'll go to our last group dinner at a local restaurant. We are looking forward to changing locations tomorrow and we feel we've been here long enough and will be one step closer to home!

The one that she'd been working on for 2 years!

The picture in the back is what they're embroidering

Jaden checking it out

"W" liked the place too!

McDonald's!!! We flew out at 2:30pm, which is just about Jaden's worst time of day. She was pretty grumpy for the first part of the flight and wouldn't really chew on anything, so I think her ears were bothering her. She finally went to sleep on me for a while but woke up when we started to descend and screamed for several minutes. Then after we landed, we made the mistake of loading her into the Baby Bjorn too soon and she threw one of her famous spicy fits while we waited to get off the plane (which took what seemed like hours). Of course, once we started moving, she was Miss Happy Girl again. What a stinker! Luckily, after that performance, she was perfect for the rest of the day. We went exploring in the White Swan Hotel and saw that is was full of American families that are also here adopting. One of our travelmates found a local Chinese restaurant that had an English menu so we decided to go to dinner there. The food was very good and Jaden was great at dinner and ate lots of rice off chopsticks. It was very inexpensive too (only 130 rmb ~ $16 per family). Jaden slept pretty well but is SO active at night. She's driving us crazy scooting around and kicking the mattress all night!
Couple of cuties in red

Our travel peeps, Hunan 1

Medical Exam Day

January 13, 2004

This morning I had to go and check more paperwork, most of which I had already filled out. Then we headed out for our first day of shopping in Guangzhou. We borrowed a stroller from the Holt office at the Swan and Jaden did OK in it, except that she hated it when we stopped moving. She dozed for a while so we explored several shops before heading back to get ready for her medical exam. We were amazed how cheap everything was. We bought Jaden her first pair of squeaky shoes (red with a white butterfly) OH and we actually found some Dr Pepper today in a little grocery store! We bought 4 and had to pay nearly a buck each for them, but we would've paid MUCH more! On to the medical exam, the office was close so we walked there as a group. Then Jaden had to go to 3 different rooms for a very basic medical exam. They weighed and measured her in one room, looked at her ears, nose and throat in another, and then checked her temperature in the 3rd. She handled it all very well and only cried a little. They said she was 25 inches long and weighed 7.5kg or about 16.5 lbs. This was done with her fully clothed, so we figure she's actually a bit less than that. Not too sure about the length either as she was very squirmy. Derek took a cute pic of her today with a Cheerio stuck on her face. :)
Exploring in Guangzhou

Dr. Pepper!! Today we traded off and each did some shopping while Jaden napped. I'm sure we're going to wish we were buying more, but we feel like we're getting a lot right now. The US Consulate is right next door to the White Swan so it was a quick walk to get there. We all went together (Hunan 1 and 2) and then just sat around waiting for the place to fill up with other families. Once everyone arrived, we went through a line to a window, showed the lady the copies of our passports, smiled and kept right on moving. Once everyone had gone through the line, a very funny consulate official came out and we took an oath that the info we had provided was all true and correct. The guy made a joke of it all saying that the babies were actually supposed to take the oath, but he understood that wouldn't happen. It was all over in a matter of about 45 minutes total, including walking there. That was it! We should be officially done with all this stuff which means NO MORE paperwork (at least in China)! Later we headed to Lucy's for our last group dinner with Hunan 1. Only one more full day, then we head HOME!

Last Day in China

January 15, 2004

We had an exit meeting this morning at 9:30am so once again, I rushed through breakfast to get there. They gave us all the info we needed to get to the airport in the morning and told us how to get through all the airports. Our bags have to be outside our door at 5am so I guess that means we'll be up super early. Joy. We spent the rest of the day doing our last minute shopping, packing our stuff and getting rid of everything we could. We donated our extra medicine to the Holt office at the Swan. We then met as a group for the last time to pick up the girls' US Visas. We checked them over and everyone clapped and cheered that we were almost done! Now we're officially ready to go home. We ate dinner with Mike, Alison and Kate in the hotel then took some pictures on the famous red couches in the White Swan. This hotel is really beautiful and has a lot to look at. We're really ready to see our house though and sleep in our own bed, the beds here have been so hard, my back may never be the same! type='text'>The Journey Home

January 16, 2004

Bags were out the door at 5am and we headed down for a quick breakfast at 6, the bus was to leave at 6:15. Neither of us felt too good this morning, I think the stress of the day was already getting to us. We were preparing ourselves for the worst (remember Jaden's first flight?). Anyway, onto the airport we went...

Flight #1-Guangzhou to Beijing
The Guangzhou airport was absolute bedlam. Apparently the Chinese New Year is the busiest time of year to fly and here we were flying on the Friday before the holiday. After a long wait, we got our bags checked and were ready to go. We were on a 777 which was very full, but we weren't that uncomfortable. Jaden was really good, much to our surprise, and her ears didn't seem to bother her at all. She slept some, played, snacked on some crackers and Cheerios the rest of the time.

Flight #2-Beijing to LA, THE BIG ONE!
Everything went well when we first got to Beijing, we all got our luggage and headed for the next place to check in. We finally get to the counter and the lady tries to tell us that our seats aren't in business class. After several minutes of arguing with her, we finally got it straightened out and then I swear we went through 10 different security checks. I wish I had counted how many times we had to show our passports. Anyway, on to the plane...once again we were reminded how much we LOVE business class and we settled into our big comfy seats and unpacked our stuff so we could find the bottles, formula, etc. Jaden got a little restless early and took a small nap for a while. We had to walk around with her sometimes to keep her quiet, but overall she did very well. She slept about 6 hours total during "the night" and though Derek and I did have a little trouble eating our meals, it went much better than we could have ever imagined. Derek had told Jaden early in the morning that if she was good all day that he would buy her a new car when she turns 16 and so far she's earning her car!

Flight #3-LA to DFW
OK, here's where the fun really begins. We actually got through customs fairly quickly but then it took several minutes to get our luggage. We were cutting it close on catching the DFW flight and were starting to stress out. We finally got our bags and took off-we didn't even really get to say proper goodbyes to everyone and I feel bad about that now. We had no idea where to go next and one guy said the United terminal was "across the street". Well, it looked like a parking garage was the only thing across the street so we ran down to where other terminals were to ask someone else and sure enough, they told us the same thing. So off we go, running across the street in the middle of traffic, with a baby, 2 backpacks, and 4 suitcases. Needless to say, we were stressed to the max by this time and I was on the verge of tears. We finally get to the terminal and there were no signs to tell you where to get in line, so again, we wasted precious time trying to figure out what to do. We ended up screaming across the counter at the ticket agent so some people let us cut in line (I'm sure we were quite scary to others by this point) and we finally got through and made the flight. Jaden was exhausted by then and so were we. She melted down a few times on the flight but the people around us still made a fuss over her, so it must have not been as bad as we thought. We walked off that plane and had never been so happy to see DFW airport in our lives. We had a quite a crowd waiting for us-Mom, Dad, Jakob, Karen, Don, Aunt Jean, Angie, Adair, Penny, Wade, Corrie, John, DiAnn, Sarah, Rick, Michelle and Grant were all there to greet us. I was so happy to see Jakob and was surprised how big he seemed. He wasn't really sure what all the fuss was about but warmed up to Derek and I quickly and gave me lots of hugs and kisses on the way home while Jaden screamed at the top of her lungs on her first ride in a car seat. Mom, Dad, Karen and Don came over later and stayed for a little while to see her. She was pretty clingy to us. Jakob just kind of looked at her and then would run off to his room. He hid behind me once, jumped out and said "BOO!" which made her laugh harder than she ever had before. It was very cute.
Meeting Jakob for the first time

Checking each other out

WE ARE SO HAPPY TO BE HOME!
